Discover Liger-Belair Echezeaux: 2008 vs. 2009 - Burgundy's Best!

A group of wine bottles

We've got a fun one for you today Burg lovers - The opportunity to compare two fantastic vintages of Liger Belair Echezeaux!

We broke up six packs in original cases to offer these as loose bottles - Grab one of each and do a side by side tasting with you friends - or by yourself, no judgement here.

Founded in 2000, the winery is relatively new and young by Burgundy standards, but the family has been making wines in Vosne Romanee for over 200 years. An extremely small production but prestigious Domaine, Liger-Belair counts amongst its holding the smallest grand cru in Burgundy and the smallest AOC in France, La Romanee, of which it is the sole owner. Today we are focusing on the 2008 and 2009 Echezeaux, both of which scored an impressive 95 points from Antonio Galloni of Vinous and 94 points from Allen Meadows of Burghound.

First up - the 2008 Echezeaux - A cooler, more classic vintage that can only be described with one word - lovely. The GRW team is really enjoying how 2008 Red Burgs are drinking right now! Meadows says, "this is so poised that it is Zen-like in its sense of harmony."

Compare this with the 2009 Echezeaux - Arguably one of the best vintages for Burgundy in decades, and Liger did absolutely no wrong this year. The GRW team has tasted both the 2009 Aux Reignots and the 2009 La Romanee and were blown away by the aromatics and complexity of both. Meadows says, "textured, supple and utterly delicious flavors."

We are offering both of these wines for the lowest prices not just in the US, but in the world, even beating out European competitors.

2008 Liger Belair Echezeaux -

"A wine of considerable inner tension, the 2008 Liger-Belair Échézeaux (magnum) presents a compelling dynamic of push and pull between all of the elements that are alive in the glass. Floral, savory aromatics meld into a core of intensely perfumed, powerful fruit, all supported by veins of underlying salinity that add cut. A deep, dense, powerful wine, the 2008 Échézeaux is utterly sublime in so many ways. This is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair." - AG95

"This is the ripest and most aromatically complex wine to this point yet despite the heightened maturity, the nose remains quite cool and airy with ample spice notes characterizing the blue and black Pinot fruit that also evidence background notes of violets and rose petal. The seductive and broad-shouldered flavors are blessed with plenty of dry extract which confers a sappy texture to the firmly structured and strikingly well-balanced finish. This is so poised that it is Zen-like in its sense of harmony." - BH94

2009 Liger Belair Echezeaux -

"The 2009 Echézeaux is all about understated elegance. There is plenty of energy in the glass, but the 2009 is quite minimalistic at this stage. Today the wine is compact and closed in on itself, which is not at all a bad thing for readers rightly planning to let the wine develop in bottle. I very much like the focus and sheer power of the finish."- AG95

"An exuberantly spicy and very ripe black fruit and cassis nose that remains admirably and attractively fresh merges into textured, supple and utterly delicious flavors brimming with ample amounts of dry extract that add to the seductive mouth feel on the strikingly complex and marvelously long finish. This is a terrific example of the appellation and will drink well young yet be fully capable of improving for at least 15 years." - BH94
